Type in a price and a tenure, get an EMI. That's what every car loan calculator on the internet does. None of them tell you if that EMI actually fits your life. This one does, using the 24-4-10 rule.
Search "car loan EMI calculator" and you'll get a dozen nearly identical tools: enter the loan amount, the interest rate, the tenure โ get a number back. That number is accurate. It's also, on its own, almost useless for the decision you're actually trying to make, which isn't "what's my EMI" but "can I actually afford this car without wrecking my monthly budget."
That's the gap this calculator closes. Alongside the standard EMI math, it scores your loan against the 24-4-10 rule โ a simple affordability framework used by financial planners to catch over-leveraged car purchases before they happen.
The 24-4-10 rule, explained
Three numbers, three checks. If your loan clears all three, you're buying a car your budget can actually absorb โ not one that will quietly squeeze your savings for the next several years.
Down payment โฅ 20%. Cars lose value the moment they leave the showroom. A smaller down payment means you can end up owing more than the car is worth for the first couple of years โ a genuinely risky spot to be in if you ever need to sell or the loan gets disrupted.
Tenure โค 4 years. Longer tenures look attractive because they shrink the EMI, but they stretch out interest payments dramatically and often outlast the car's useful life at that value. A car loan running longer than the car's realistic resale window is a warning sign, not a convenience.
EMI โค 10% of monthly income. This is the one every generic calculator skips entirely. A car is a depreciating asset โ unlike a home loan, it isn't building equity in something that (usually) appreciates. Capping it at 10% of income keeps room for the rest of your financial life: investments, emergencies, and other debt.

If your monthly income is โน2,00,000, that EMI is just about 10% โ close to a textbook "ideal fit" by the 24-4-10 rule. Drop your income to โน80,000 with the same loan, and that same EMI jumps to roughly 25% of income โ comfortably into stretched territory, even though the loan terms haven't changed at all.
Why tenure changes more than your EMI
The most common car-loan mistake is choosing a longer tenure purely to shrink the monthly number, without checking what it does to total cost.

Ways to improve your affordability score
Increase your down payment. Even moving from 10% to 20% down meaningfully cuts both your EMI and total interest, and it's the single fastest way to clear the first 24-4-10 check.
Shorten the tenure if you can absorb the EMI. A 3-year loan costs more per month but dramatically less overall โ worth it if your income comfortably covers the higher instalment.
Negotiate the on-road price, not just the EMI. Dealers often steer the conversation toward "what EMI can you afford" instead of the actual price โ a smaller principal improves every part of the calculation.
Compare lenders on rate, not just approval speed. A 1.5% difference in interest rate on an 8-lakh, 4-year loan works out to tens of thousands of rupees in extra interest.

What's a good EMI-to-income ratio for a car loan?
Most planners recommend keeping your car EMI at or below 10% of your monthly income, since a car is a depreciating asset. Going above 20โ25% is generally considered financially stretched, and above 30% is high-risk regardless of what a lender approves.
Should I choose a longer tenure to reduce my EMI?
