Enter your goal amount, expected return and time period to instantly see the exact monthly SIP required to reach it.
A Goal SIP calculator works backward from a regular SIP calculator. Instead of telling you the future value of a fixed monthly SIP, it tells you the exact monthly SIP you need to invest — at a given expected return and time period — to reach a specific target amount, like a child's education fund, a house down payment, or a retirement goal.
For a flat (non-step-up) SIP, the required monthly investment is derived by rearranging the standard SIP future value formula:
P = FV × r / [ ( (1 + r)n − 1 ) × (1 + r) ]
Where FV is your goal amount, r is the monthly rate of return, and n is the number of months. When step-up is enabled, this calculator uses an iterative search to find the correct starting SIP, since a step-up SIP does not have a simple closed-form formula.
Enter your goal amount, expected annual return, and the number of years you have to reach it. If you plan to increase your SIP every year in line with rising income, tick "Include annual step-up in SIP" and set the yearly increase percentage — the required starting SIP will adjust accordingly.
What if the required SIP is more than I can currently afford?
Try enabling the step-up option — starting with a smaller SIP and increasing it annually can make the same goal reachable with a lower starting contribution. You can also extend the time period or revisit the expected return assumption.
What return rate should I use for my goal?
This depends on the asset class and your goal's time horizon. Longer-horizon equity goals are often planned around 10–14% illustrative returns, while shorter-horizon or debt-heavy goals typically use a lower assumption.
Is the goal amount adjusted for inflation?
No — enter your goal amount in today's terms only if you've already inflation-adjusted it yourself. For inflation-adjusted retirement goals specifically, use our Retirement Planning Calculator.
Can I calculate this for a lumpsum goal instead of a SIP?
Yes — use our Goal Lumpsum Calculator to find out how much to invest today as a one-time amount to reach the same target.
